ANTWERP - Sketching Class

I finally managed to scan in most of what I did while studying abroad at Sint Lucas in Antwerp, Belgium, so I'm going to start posting bits and pieces over the next few days.

The first things going up are some of the pages from my sketching class, where we would meet at various places in the city and draw what was around us.

The two bottom ones are from the Starbucks by central station, and the right one is from the basement of my house.

Illustration - Studies and references, Fact and Fiction

Our current illustration project at Sint Lucas, which will last from now till the end of the semester, is the theme "Fact and fiction," interpreted how we would like. So, me being obsessed with myths and fairy tales, I'm going with a theme of mythical birds and the cultures they come from. I don't have too many pages yet, as all my referencing and google researching has been done using an ipod touch, because my laptop decided to be silly and go break itself. As you can imagine, trying to have six or seven windows of images open on a little ipod safari browser is quite irritating.

Anyways, enough rambling. Here is the first page of sketches and references for the first bird and culture, the Firebird which comes frim Russian/Slavic beliefs.

In Russian folklore, the firebird often appears as an object to be quested after because of it's beautiful glowing feathers, or it is the prize for defeating a great and terrible magician. It is generally described as having feathers like flames(Go figure), a beak and claws of gold, eyes like rubies; and it's tail feathers are like brilliant streamers. In some tales, the firebird can also change into a woman.

In images of the bird, it is usually depicted as looking very similar to a peacock. So I get to draw nice big pretty tail feathers :)

These pages are from my sketchbook last year though, so they're a little old, but I like them still and rediscovered them recently :)

The first three, dancers and skeleton page, are from freshman year actually. Fourth page is from sohpomore year I think, a character design relating to the African spider god, Anansi.

The hands on the dancers look so pudgy, oh dear. I'm happy to say my hands and fingers have improved since then.

 

Sorry for the poor quality, I shot them with my camera as I don't have ready access to a scanner at the moment.

Sophie's Masterpiece

So I just realiwed I had some other pieces I never put up from my Children's Book Illustration class with Tom Casmer. Here are two of the final colored pages, as well as a couple pages from the dummy-mock up book I put together. Sorry if the order is jumbled, I tried putting them in the correct order with as little space taken up as possible. There are many more pages, but these are, in my opinion, the most effective ones.

 

ANTWERP - Sint Lucas

As people who have me on facebook are aware(Or should be aware. I've been blabbering on about it for months now), I am now in Antwerp, Belgium, having officially started the student exchange program with the Karel de Grote school, aka Sint Lucas of Antwerp, through Ringling College.

Antwerp is a beautiful city. So many things to see and explore. The students in my classes are all nice and perfectly willing to humor the silly American and speak English for me. Though I'm attempting to learn dutch, it's a very slow process.

Anyways. Right now I don't have any illustration stuff to show, since I don't have anything for the first project yet(First assignment is designing illustrations for booklets on the dutch language.) All I have so far really are some figure drawings, which I need some serious work on. Blech. All of these are between two minutes and I think fifteen minutes. Poses so far have never been more then twenty minutes(No three day poses here!)
